Why are sometimes smart people so gullible and daft people so clever?

People believe what they want to believe because they want to believe it. "Smart" people are not immune to this. We see it in religion, politics, and science. Our culture has had a problem dealing with reality when it tells us things we do not want to hear for several generations and it is only getting worse. Life is not a Disney movie.
