If a slightly older guy meets a younger colleague for a beer and some appetizers, shouldn't the older guy pay?

This could go either way. You invited him, so either you pay or go dutch. You wrote the recommendation for him to get the job, so it would be nice for him to pay, as a way of thanking you. He lost the job, so it was very nice and considerate of you to pick up the tab. = )
