It was in the sewer. How Voldy knew about it, can't say, must have read about it in the library. So he knew Parseltongue and decided to see if he could bring it out. By then I think he knew he was the heir or Slytherin. So it came out of the sink. The pipes run below the floor I think and Harry heard it the floor below. And anyway Ginny let it out when it attacked the others. The chamber is below the pipes. And you see how so many things fit into the boot of the car or so many people fit in a tent. So the Basilisk could crawl through the pipes.
