Can you work as a police officer while going to school?

I am currently studying to obtain a law degree in California and start a career as a criminal prosecutor; however, I am interested in working as a police officer to extend my knowledge on different aspects of the criminal justice field and help pay for my schooling until i transition towards an attorney. Is this possible? or is becoming a police officer solely for the purpose of a career.
